Palai Müller-Thurgau 2016 375ml
Highly respected wine critic and Italian expert Antonio Galloni once wrote that Pojer e Sandri “has been one my favourite wineries since my student days in Boston, when I always found the wines to deliver superb quality.” Inexplicably they remain completely under the radar to this day, which is hard to understand when you come across wines like this…
This half bottle is an intensely aromatic Müller-Thurgau packed with peach, lemon and fresh flowers that pairs wonderfully with fresh fish, simple pasta with sage butter, salads and exotic Vietnamese or Thai flavours. The grapes are worked in a vacuum, using a method invented by Pojer & Sandri, to maintain the delicate aromas. And it is a masterful piece of winemaking.
Unless you’re very much in the know, Pojer & Sandri are probably the most exciting producers you’ve never heard of. This talented duo may look like a pair of ageing German rockers, but they have created one of Italy’s most remarkable and trend-setting wineries. Opening up as two blokes with two hectares in 1975, they were the first to bottle and market Chardonnay in the country, they have also dabbled in “Nordic-style” sweet wines and unexplored weird and wonderful terroirs, always with one eye on the environment and sustainability. They now have 35 hectares on steep hillsides called Faedo between Valle dell’Adige and Valle di Cembra.
