2015 was sensational for Brunello di Montalcino. Described by Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by Italian wine expert James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”. So don’t sleep on the new wines coming out now…

Marino Colleoni's Podere Santa Maria estate nestles in the hills near Montalcino with stunning views towards Sienna and the classic rolling landscape of Tuscany beyond. He and his wife Luisa were out for an evening stroll when they discovered a patch of vines buried in the undergrowth. Over the next couple of years they cleared the bushes away and replanted the damaged vines. Now they boast some of the highest and steepest vineyards in the region.

A fairly new name on the Brunello scene the estate is managed organically with painstaking attention to detail applied in getting the best from the vineyards and in the cellar. Stylistically the wines are elegant and fine with a restrained oak policy and an emphasis on fruit purity. Rave reviews from across the Atlantic mean that Colleoni’s wines have never been in more demand and subsequent availability is highly limited.

This Brunello di Montalcino possesses great finesse fine structure and fantastic length. Subtle aromas of red cherry plum cedar bay leaf and dried basil grace a multi-faceted nose whilst the palate is medium weight silky and savoury with a delicious balance and focused quality. A delicious match with lamb venison or wild mushroom dishes.
