Calmarossa Etna Rosso 2016
Santa Maria La Nave create some of the coolest and rarest wines to ever grace our portfolio.
Viticulture doesn’t get much more extreme than on the side of an active volcano. Santa Maria La Nave organically tend extremely old vines (including some from the pre-phylloxera era) amid ancient lava flow on the vertiginous slopes of Mount Etna, to create small-batch wines of exceptional quality. Each vine yields less than a bottle of wine, so the work they do here in protecting the indigenous grape varieties on the brink of extinction is nothings short of heroic.
Their red wine is called Calmarossa and is made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Matured in French oak for nine months, the resulting vegan-friendly Etna Rosso is reminiscent of the elegance of Burgundian Pinot Noir, but with a volcanic twist. It’s as intense and unique as the landscape it was raised in; cherries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, hedgerow brambles, cocoa, graphite, vanilla, cinnamon and a whip of sea spray.
Pair this numbered bottle with something of equal finesse, such as meat still pink in the middle, meaty fish such as tuna steaks or sardines, whole cauliflower rubbed with harissa and roasted on a bed of chickpeas, tomato-based pasta dishes or Hungarian lecsó.
The journey for Santa Maria La Nave began with Giuseppe ‘Peppino’ Mulone in 1954 and his passion for this land sprouted new shoots in his granddaughter Sonia Spadaro Mulone. Through the fierce heat of summer, the freezing snow of winter, the blustery sea breezes, the altitude, the rough terrain and the threat of eruption, she continues to protect this Sicilian heritage for future generations.
