Rueda Verdejo 2018
Saturnino Cantalapiedra was the pharmacist in La Seca, the finest vineyard town in Rueda. His chemistry skills landed him unofficial work at the local cooperative, there he singled out Verdejo as the grape best suited to this region, shaping Rueda’s future. Now his granddaughter Marta makes wine in his honour from old vines that battle against the cold winters and hot summers in El Camino del Puerto – known as the “golden mile” for Verdejo.
She picks the grapes at night when the sugars are stable and the temperatures are cool, and ages the wine on the spent lees to impart richness and body, in much the same way as they do for Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie. The result is aromatic, herby and creamy, with the crispy crunch of green apples and the juiciness of ripe peaches. It’s a wine that’s as at home with a green salad as it is with a fruit salad; it also makes a fine match for salty cheese like aged Gouda, tomato sauces, sunshine, seafood and the fresh flavours of zingy Vietnamese food.
