Tasting Notes
94+ points, “Yet again, the compact signature 2019 palate texture density and harmony is unambiguous… This is the most confident and accomplished expression of the Thief in the Night to date.” – Greg Sherwood MW
Thief in the Night 2019 is a Rhône-style blend with a South African twist, comprising Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from dry-farmed bush vines in Piekenierskloof. The grapes were all co-fermented and then aged in a single large oak vat for 11 months. What emerges from that 3400-litre foudre is a crystal-clear red that shines like a ruby. We can only describe it as rakish – undeniably dashing, but with a mischievous character and bags of swagger. There’s something foresty about it; autumn leaves, hedgerows, pine sap and petrichor. Layered on top of that are black cherries, redcurrants, blackberries, black olive and a seasoning of salt and pepper. Sip this alongside winter’s comfort food and roasts, if you can grab one before it gets pinched by Savage Wines’ adoring fans. Watch out because they're as swift as a thief in the night.
Having spent 11 years working at Cape Point Vineyards, a five-star-rated winery according to Platter’s Wine Guide, and having thoroughly mastered maritime and high-altitude winemaking, Duncan Savage fulfilled his dream of creating his very own wines when he released his maiden 2011 Red and 2012 White. The quality of those wines rocketed this young talent into the spotlight, and they’ve been a favourite at Harvey Nichols ever since. After moving into a new urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town, the strength of Savage Wines range has soared, and these cult South African wines often sell out on release.
