Blanc de Noirs Brut Reserve 2012
An elegant Austrian vintage sparkling wine born from the expertise of the world renowned Champagne house Ruinart. The finest Austrian Pinot Noir from Burgenland is gently pressed to produce a clear juice and avoid extracting the red colour from the skins. Fermented in the bottle using the Méthode Traditionnelle made famous by Champagne, Schlumberger’s Blanc de Noirs is a speciality of the house and is matured for at least two years. Deeply yeasty, with notes of summery red berries, passionfruit, pineapple, apple, caramel, exotic spices and nuances of creamy Burgundy; Harvey Nichols adores this served alongside sushi or sashimi, crab canapés and scrambled eggs.
Born in Stuttgart in 1814, Robert Schlumberger was forced to quit his studies and become a wine merchant following his father’s untimely death. His career brought him to Rheims in the very heart of the world’s most prestigious sparkling wine producing region. Here he took a role at Ruinart Peré et Fils Champagne house and climbed the dizzying heights of Chef de Cave. However, he fell in love with a Viennese lady called Sophie Kirchner and eventually followed her back to Austria where he created the Schlumberger vineyards. His wines shot to critical acclaim, being served at the Imperial Court of Austria-Hungary and even to Queen Victoria. Still to this day the Schlumberger house employs the ‘Méthode Traditionnelle’ learned by Robert in Champagne. The outstandingly elegant sparkling wines are also riddled by hand, a laborious task that demonstrates the dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
