Both gins are infused with Champagne grape varieties that thrive in The Secret Garden Distillery’s glasshouse in Scotland. Once hand harvested the grapes are lovingly squished and then blended through a base gin that was expertly crafted with juniper coriander angelica root and winter savory. The Chardonnay Gin is the naturally lighter of the pair with a crisp citrussy and summery disposition while the Pinot Noir version (which actually contains both Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes) has a richer fragrance with notes of succulent red fruits. Filled into two pleasingly giftable 200ml bottles these Champagne-inspired gins are alive with the natural flavours and aromas of the grape jus and are great to taste side by side.
The Secret Garden Distillery recommends a simple serve of the gin poured over ice and topped with a light tonic water and a twist of lemon. Or if you fancy being a little more adventurous maybe try the Chardonnay Gin with lemon juice honey and cloudy apple juice and the Pinot Noir with some sweet vermouth maraschino liqueur and a dash of angostura bitters. We plan to grab a Blanc de Blancs Champagne and a rosé and start experimenting with a few French 75s and then to mix up an Auld Alliance twist on a Negroni Sbagliato using one of these Scottish gins and French bubbles instead of the usual Prosecco. In 2012 the husband-and-wife team of Hamish and Liberty Martin – an ex-wine merchant with a first-class diploma in Herbology and a trained beekeeper with a penchant for antiques – bought a derelict plot of land at the foot of the Pentland Hills on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
