Phigaia After the Red 2016


This is one of those classic reds that remains, for some inexplicable reason, under the radar. Phigaia comes from Prosecco country but has been crafted using the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s very much Veneto’s answer to the Super Tuscans, and has that similar polished feel, French oak and sexiness about it. Matured for 13 to 18 months in oak, Phigaia then receives at least a year in the bottle before release. In the glass, it’s a seductive blend of fresh cherries, cherry liqueur, cassis, pepper, coffee, vanilla and dried herbs. All of which makes it a fine choice for a Sunday roast, steak night, slow-cooked Bolognese and confusing wine experts in blind tastings.

Francesco Serafini is an exuberant extrovert of this pair – winemaker, connoisseur, vine grower, cellar master and raconteur. Antonello Vidotto is the quieter of the two, most at home in his vineyards out of the limelight. But together these school friends have created one of Veneto’s finest wineries. Serafini & Vidotto was founded in 1986 at Nervesa della Battaglia beneath the ruins of an old abbey, and this dynamic duo have been learning and loving their wines ever since.
