When Jancis Robinson compares a Marlborough Syrah to Côte-Rôtie, you know it’s something special. These unusual Syrah vines were grafted on to 15-year-old Gewürztraminer vines and have been farmed organically and biodynamically. The grapes picked from them create a leathery and peppery wine with luscious damson, blackberry and cherry fruit, coupled with a pinch of cinnamon spice and a splash of herby balsamic. It’s no wonder that Seresin Syrah was awarded 91 points by Decanter Magazine and Jancis Robinson drew comparison with one of the Rhône Valley’s finest regions. Pair this elegant red with Beef Wellington, grouse in season, roasted tomato sauces, peppery dishes, chestnuts or wild boar sausages.
Established in the early 1990s, Seresin is one of New Zealand’s finest wine producers as well as a leading name in organic and biodynamic production. Cinematographer Michael Seresin (Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Gravity) had his passion for wine ignited after exploring Italy during visits to his second home in the hills of Tuscany. Employing a traditional, gentle and philosophical approach to winemaking, everything on the Seresin estate is hand-tended and hand-harvested using as little intervention as possible. Based in the sunny heart of Marlborough, they aim to put more back into the soil than they take out, building strong vines and promoting biodiversity.
