Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 - Shafer

Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

98+ points, “Great length and depth.” – Wine Advocate

97+ points, “A total sense of harmony.” – Antonio Galloni

One of the famous benchmarks of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine from the Stags Leap District always impresses. In 2014 Shafer’s Hillside Select is a little more restrained than normal, giving it a certain air of class. And it certainly impressed the wine critics of the world with its dense inky cassis, cocoa, liquorice, crushed rocks, dried herbs, meat cooking over barbeque coals and Black Forest gateau flavours. This is one of those showstopper wines to open when you want the whole room to take notice.

In the 1970s John Shafer packed in his morning commute in Chicago for driving a TD-9 tractor around vineyards in Napa Valley. Some of the vineyards that the Shafers purchased were first planted in the 1880s, so had quite the pedigree. This pioneering spirit was rewarded as Shafer has been called “one of the world’s greatest wineries” by Robert Parker. They get all their power from solar panels and have donated five acres of their land to the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County.
