Dirt Vernacular Grenache 2016
100 points, “One of the finest Grenaches to ever pass my lips.” – Jeb Dunnock
96 points, “Considerable power and ripeness, with a deep, layered mid-palate and a long, lusty finish.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
95-98 points, “Rich and voluptuous in the glass, with immense fruit intensity, the 2016 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
An eclectic blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Touriga Nacional and Petite Sirah, Dirt Vernacular got its name because it speaks of the earth. Aged in a blend of new French oak, used barrels and concrete tanks for almost two years, just to calm its wildness down. Exceedingly dark for a Grenache, it rampages from the glass with cherry liqueur, plums, sweet Christmas spices and Turkish delight. You could dab this on as a perfume and admirers would come flocking. This fabulous wine has to be one of the finest Grenache reds we’ve ever had the pleasure to pull the cork on.
California’s cult Sine Qua Non is arguably the most collectable wine producers on the planet, earning a place in the pantheon of greats alongside the likes of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Château Pétrus and Bordeaux’s First Growths. Manfred Krankl moved to Los Angeles, where he met his wife Elaine. Together, with a little help from their friends Bryan Babcock and John Alban, they created Sine Qua Non in Ventura County, just down the road from the vineyards their grapes come from in Santa Barbara. Their highly desirable Rhône-inspired wines are handcrafted in tiny batches and are highly idiosyncratic, receiving bizarre names and artistic labels with each new vintage. The Krankls’ winemaking techniques are often compared to those of the great Etienne Guigal and they enlisted the help of master Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher for their sweet wines, perfectly demonstrating what elite circles they are operating in. Everything is sold through a mailing list and strict allocation, making them almost impossible to come by. But Sine Qua Non’s name comes from a Latin term meaning a thing that is absolutely necessary, and tasting one of their iconic wines before you die is exactly that.
