Tasting Notes
94 points, “This is really lovely. There’s some black pepper and fresh black cherry, along with some raspberry freshness and silky mouthfeel. There are no rough edges here: it has freshness, some fleshiness and also lovely precision. This bridges the Old and New Worlds beautifully with precision and purity.”- Dr Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
Any new project from Master of Wine, Steve Smith, needs to be firmly on the radar of a true fine wine lover…
CRU is the latest creation from Steve Smith MW (a legend in the New Zealand wine game who has worked at Villa Maria and Craggy Range) and Brian Sheth (the American businessman and wildlife conservationist who is presumably bankrolling the initiative). The idea behind it is to create a contemporary negociant business, buying grapes from some of the country’s greatest growers and using them to create wines focussed on terroir and Tūrangawaewae. Terroir, as we all know, is the French word that describes a wine’s sense of place. Tūrangawaewae is Māori word that defines a place to stand in the world, where one feels empowered and connected.
The Heretaunga Syrah is classic Gimblett Gravels and a potential decade of longevity. Expect quite a savoury style that will appeal to Rhône fans, but also a plushness to the dark fruit that will appeal to those who favour something more New World. Black olive tapenade and red liquorice mingle with blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry and blueberry fruit, dried wildflowers, plum crumble and lots of peppery spice. The juxtaposition of new and old makes it a super-versatile wine that will be equally at home with the Sunday roast or a casual barbeque.
