1931 Rum 5th Edition
St Lucia Distillers may be most famous for producing Chairman’s Reserve, but those in the know lie in wait for the Barnard family’s super-premium 1931 Rum. Released annually in honour of the distillery set up by Denis Barnard in his Dennery plantation in the eponymous year, these rums invariably sweep the gold medals in spirit competitions. The majority is sold in the US, leaving very little for these shores, if any at all.
The highly anticipated fifth edition comes in a dashing hot pink outfit and decanter-style bottle, and it’s a blend of pot still, Coffey column and rhum agricole aged in bourbon casks for between six and twelve years. Pulling the stopper releases a powerful rum packed with a fruit salad of banana, pineapple, mint, tangerine and lime juice. There’s also a healthy dose of caramelised nuts, black pepper, varnished antique furniture, Port, vanilla fudge, salty olive brine, cardamom and a refreshing sugar cane sparkle from the agricole component.
For any serious rum enthusiast this is not to be missed.
