Starward Whisky Projects Bourbon Cask Australian Single Malt Whisky 500ml
Since blasting off in 2009, Starward has rocketed to new heights, exploring the whisky universe and discovering stars the likes of which have never been seen before. That journey continues with the launch of their experimental range Starward Whisky Projects.
This limited-edition in the series is an Australian Single Malt Whisky aged in Bourbon Casks – specifically four first-fill barrels from Wild Turkey and Maker’s Mark. They created just 1,200 bottles, which sold out within four hours on the website; however, Harvey Nichols has secured a handful. Aged for four and half years and bottled at 52%, this whisky blazes like a comet leaving a trail of ripe banana, charred pineapple, toasted coconut, sherbet, melon, lemongrass, custard creams and buttery salted caramel shortbread in its wake.
Produced at the New World Whisky Distillery in Victoria, Starward is for the single malt connoisseur, the adventurous explorer and the craft beer lover. It’s distilled using bespoke locally grown brewer’s barley, which is much harder to manipulate than distiller’s barley, but has a far fuller flavour. As anyone who has visited Melbourne knows, the cold currents from Antarctica and the hot desert winds that come across the mainland result in rapidly changing weather, humidity and temperatures. This causes the whisky within the barrels to mature rapidly and develop a deep colour and rich flavour, meaning that Starward’s youngest malts become super smooth and are often mistaken for substantially older bottlings.
Free from the shackles of tradition, David Vitale and his team are creating unique and world-beating Australian whisky in an urban distillery. Not only are they picking up World Whiskies Awards and medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, but they are putting the fun back into single malt.
