Quinta da Fonte Souto Branco 2018

£19.95

The inaugural vintage of this wine was described by Jancis Robinson as: “Powerful and intense on the palate, full bodied, spice on the tip of your tongue. Creamy texture, mouth-filling fruit but still very fresh.” Wine Advocate called it: “A white with some personality... it sings for a reasonable price.” And it just gets better with each new vintage…

The two core Fonte Souto wines are an amazing progression on from the Florão range for just a few pounds more. The wonderfully unique Branco gives more focus to Arinto in the blend over the Verdelho and is joined by lees ageing and maturation in oak and acacia for eight months. We love oaked Portuguese whites like this because they balance all that rich and creamy texture, woody spice, yeastiness and cedar with an incredibly refreshing zing. Expect pineapple, lots of citrus, greengage, sorbet and a lot more oomph than you would usually expect at this price point. We enjoy it with lightly-spiced creamy sauces like Vietnamese curries, butter chicken or korma, but it works equally well with fish in creamy sauces, fresh pasta dishes and anything with a tropical edge, such as Caribbean food or tacos with pineapple salsa.

The Symington family have been making wines in Portugal since the 19th Century. They’re the world’s leading producer of premium Port and the biggest vineyard owner in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty. As the producers of Graham’s, Dow’s, Cockburn’s, Warre’s and Quinta do Vesuvio, they’re obviously most famous for their Ports, but they are now starting to branch out into wider Portugal. Their new project Quinta da Fonte Souto is their first outside of the Douro in 135 years and five generations and the debut release stunned the wine buyers at Harvey Nichols. Located within a natural park at altitude in the exciting Portalegre sub-region of Alentejo. The name, Fonte Souto, is a reference to the natural springs that feed water to the area and the abundance of chestnut groves, but the bucolic estate also contains vineyards, forests, cork oaks, cherry orchards and olive trees. Judging by the first release, this is a hot property to watch with Wine Advocate saying: “This project looks likely to be a fine success.”
