Every year since 2001, Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender, Dr Craig Wilson, the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor, and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code, providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries, plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.
We love young Talisker, so we’re pretty happy that this luminescent dram has surfaced from the deep and washed up on our shore. Talisker 11 Year Old Special Release 2022 comes is made of lightly peated stocks from ex-Bourbon casks. It was inspired by the legend of luminous jellyfish drawn from the blackest depths of the ocean and carried by storm-tossed currents into Talisker Bay, illuminating the new-make spirit cooling on the shore. And it certainly is a bright expression of this much-loved Scotch. Talisker’s unmistakable peppery prickle combines with a maritime saltiness and wafts of smoke that sing of bonfires on the beach and fishing boat engines chugging out to sea through the seaweed. Those famous flavours are joined by notes of spicy Mexican chillies and sweet fruit – think apples, pears, peach and a twist of citrus. It’s enough to turn the legs to jelly. Just watch out for that classic Talisker sting in the tail.
