Awatea Cabernets/Merlot 2018
Long regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest reds, Awatea 2018 will only heighten this wine’s stellar reputation. Described by Jancis Robinson’s team of experts as “very savoury and serious with lots of Bordelais styling” and as having “the power and fruit purity to improve over the next decade or more”, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is simply fabulous. Writing for Australia’s The Wine Front, Gary Walsh awarded it 94 points and called it a “beautiful svelte Cabernet of grace and class.” The Awatea 2018 is clearly an intriguing opportunity.
An abundance of bright raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, cassis and blackberry is layered over a foundation of espresso, chocolate, cedar, paprika, wooden pencils and dried herbs. It’s a glorious Bordeaux-style Kiwi that would be a fine choice for the Sunday roast or slow-cooked herby stews.
Nestled in the heart of Hawke’s Bay, Te Mata is one of the few New Zealand’s wineries that can claim to have been established in the 19th Century. The Estate vineyards were first planted in 1892 on free-draining, north-facing slopes – the distinctive shape of the hills and unique soil composition make these sites a perfect location for grape growing. Having been in continuous operation since 1895, this independent, family-owned winery is New Zealand’s oldest and one of the most highly regarded and internationally recognised.
