Tenuta San Guido

Sassicaia 2017

97 points, “This boasts extraordinary elegance and freshness despite the hot vintage.” – Wine Enthusiast

96 points, “The balance and beauty to this is impressive… It’s polished, yet concentrated. Better after 2022, but already very seductive.” – James Suckling

95+ points, “Textural harmony, seamless balance and fruit purity remain at the core of this wine’s essence. Another stunning wine delivered.” – Greg Sherwood MW

94 points, “The 2017 Sassicaia was expertly built to withstand a long aging future… This fascinating wine magically captures the hallmarks of cool-temperature winemaking in one of the hottest vintages in recent years.” – Wine Advocate

The Sassicaia 2017 is an absolute masterclass in how to make elegant wine in a hot vintage. The value for money is also looking very keen compared to its predecessor – the 2016 – whose price has skyrocketed since receiving a 100-point score from Wine Advocate. Quite how the team at Tenuta San Guido managed to retain so much finesse and such exotic aromatics during such a warm growing season is a mystery, but that’s what makes Sassicaia so special. As respected wine critic Antonio puts it, this “is a wild, exotic beauty. Sumptuous and flamboyantly ripe, the 2017 captures all the personality of the year in spades.” Curvy and racy with a wonderfully creamy texture and notes of plum crumble, cherry liqueur, blackcurrants, pomegranate, wild herbs, brambles, meadow flowers and barbeque spices; but volumes were down by 15% on this intriguing vintage, so don’t miss out.

What can you say about the legend that is Sassicaia? Widely acknowledged to be the first Super Tuscan and a catalyst for an Italian winemaking revolution. A wine so controversial it was relegated to a table wine by the restrictive DOC regulations, only to prove so successful and highly revered that it was granted its own DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia – the only single estate to receive this privilege. The first Italian wine to receive 100 points from Robert Parker, a red that regularly beats Bordeaux’s First Growths in blind tasting competitions and one that prompted Jancis Robinson to ask herself “Does my working life get any better than this?” after sampling several vintages from magnum, before concluding “No it does not.” That’s why Decanter Magazine describes it as: “One of the greatest wines in the world, famed and feted for its timeless elegance, balance and longevity.”
