Steel Bonnets First Edition Blended Malt Whisky
The Lakes Distillery – whose founder also set up Isle of Arran Distillers so knows a thing or two about making great whisky – has been pushing the boundaries for a while now. But their Steel Bonnets goes one step further by crossing borders.
Created in honour of the people who lived in the Border Marches of England and Scotland between the 13th and 17th Century. This area was so remote from each country’s capital that it became lawless, ungovernable and deeply independent. Much like this rule-breaking, no holds barred dram, which takes malt whiskies from both nations and blends them together. The Scottish part is a fiercely guarded secret, but the English part is pure The Lakes Distillery’s finest.
The Steel Bonnets were raiders – both Scottish and English – who lived along the border and wore metal helmets to protect themselves while robbing and rampaging. The whisky they inspired earned itself a Gold Medal in the World Whisky Ultra-Premium category at The Spirits Business Masters 2018. And it’s not hard to understand why when you taste the deep complexity of wood smoke, clove, granola, leather, pear drops, peppercorns, ginger, dried fruits, pecan pie, praline, toffee, green apple, malted milk biscuits and cold steel. Drink from the helmet of your vanquished enemy.
The team at The Lakes Distillery has morphed a Victorian cattle farm into a world-class spirits producer, highlighted as one of the top five new distilleries in the world by Time Out USA. Located on the banks of the only official lake in the entire Lake District National Park (the others are technically meres or waters), they’re fiercely proud of their provenance as demonstrated by this release.
