Another Good Year for the Roses is a super-rare rosé from a Certified Heritage Vineyard planted in 1954. The wine bears the stamp of South Africa’s new ‘Old Vine Project’ a celebration of the country’s gnarliest and most unique vineyards. Only 400 bottles were produced and we loved it so much we secured around half of them for our rosé-loving customers.

The wine is inspired by a ballad called ‘A Good Year for the Roses’ which was written by Jerry Chesnut originally recorded by the country singer George Jones but made famous in the UK by Elvis Costello. The Cinsault grapes were picked at Otterkuil a farm on the Durbanville Road in Agter-Paarl then sent to a winery called Windmeul who used them to make a red wine. In so doing they drew off some of the juice to concentrate the colour of the red. And that wonderful juice became Another Good Year for the Roses 2021. Fermented completely dry this wine buzzes with crunchy red fruit energy and the concentrated complexity you only get from romantic old vines like these.

As a panel taster for South African Wine Magazine a contributor to the highly respected Platter’s South African Wines Guide and a certified Master of Wine Richard Kelley is one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the world. Over three decades in the industry this Cape Crusader has made a lot of friends throughout that great winemaking nation. Every time he visits the Cape he pops in to see his buddies and rummage through their cellars uncovering great wines that don’t quite fit in the winery’s portfolio are deemed too experimental or that they plan to simply fill into big blends. On discovering these gems Richard – going by his alter ego Rick – ‘liberates’ them bottles them and sells them under the small-batch label The Liberator. Each one is completely unique and when it’s gone unlikely to ever be repeated.
