In 1921 an English architect by the name of William Curtis Green, was commissioned by Wolseley Motors Limited to design a prestigious car showroom at 160 Piccadilly, London. In 1927 it was taken over by Barclays Bank and, for its combination of British heritage and European grandeur, became known as “Piccadilly’s Shining Pearl”. In 2003 it was renovated by the restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King and reopened as London’s first Grand Café. Retaining its banking counter, managers’ offices, domed ceiling and monochrome geometric marble flooring, this beautiful space has become one of the places to be seen in the capital. Particularly famed for its Afternoon Tea.
