Rocking Horse 2014 - Thorne & Daughters

Thorne & Daughters

Rocking Horse 2014

Johannesburg-born John met his wife Tasha at the University of Stellenbosch where he studied maths and computer science and she was a fine art student. Moving to the UK in the early 2000s, John worked in the computer industry in both Oxford and Edinburgh before taking the plunge and entering a winemaking course at Plumpton College in 2004. In 2008 the couple moved back to the Cape and John instantly got a job as a winemaker at Thelema Winery, before setting up his on venture Thorne & Daughters in 2012. The ‘Rocking Horse’ is a Cape blend, but rather using Chenin Blanc as the Central variety, John has chosen to lead with Rousanne, incorporating both Chardonnay and Semillon along the way. All grapes are sourced on contract, using Rosa Kruger as a conduit to finding some of the oldest and most interesting vines the Cape has to offer. Confirming the abundant promise of the Maiden 2013, this is focused, floral and rich, with honey, baking spices and some texture from old oak fermentation.
