Old Vines Zinfandel 2017
93 points, “This wine’s depth and purity are mesmerising.” – Decanter Magazine
Featured as part of an article entitled “California’s under the radar wines”, in which Decanter Magazine profiled the “the fascinating and the smaller-scale” in the Golden State, Turley’s Old Vines Zinfandel 2017 is a heavenly find. Expert American wine critic Antonio Galloni agrees, praising the “exotic flair to this super-expressive wine loaded with class and pedigree.” Isn’t it time you tried this vegan-friendly red?
Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley, the former winemaker at Frog’s Leap Winery and an outspoken devotee to old vines of Zinfandel. Specialising in single-vineyard wines, Turley has acquired an almost cult-like status with sommeliers, consumers and critics all over the world. In the words of Wine Advocate: “Turley Wine Cellars has long been one of the more enviable wine operations in California.”
Although the majority of Turley’s wines come from single vineyards, Old Vines Zinfandel is a blend from 18 old-vine sites – the average age of the vines is 80 years – spanning Amador County, Lodi, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Paso Robles and Contra Costa. These plots are either too small to be made into single-vineyard wines or are relatively new to the Turley portfolio and so are still being experimented with. California through and through, this silky and opulent wine oozes plum, Chambord, violet, pepper, blueberry muffin, black cherry, blackberry, potpourri, chewy liquorice and Chinese five spice. Phenomenal stuff for pairing with barbeque sauce, sticky ribs, hoisin, spicy stews, peppered steak and Mexican mole.
