Juvenile Zinfandel 2018
There is nothing childish about Juvenile. This seriously grown-up red sets the benchmark for classic Californian Zinfandel and is screaming out for barbeque sauce, hoisin, spicy stews, peppery steak and Mexican mole.
Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley, the former winemaker at Frog’s Leap Winery and an outspoken devotee to old vines of Zinfandel. Specialising in single-vineyard wines, Turley has acquired an almost cult-like status with sommeliers, consumers and critics all over the world. In the words of Wine Advocate: “Turley Wine Cellars has long been one of the more enviable wine operations in California.”
Although the majority of Turley’s wines come from single vineyards, Juvenile is crafted using grapes harvested from the younger vines spread throughout their top plots. Using the name ‘Juvenile’ is still slightly tongue in cheek, because these vines range from between six and 25 years of age. 29 vineyards are used, spanning 11 counties in the Golden State, which makes this bottle California through and through. Only made in small volumes each year, so opportunities to taste it are fleeting. But if you get the chance to pull the cork on one of these rare bottles, you’ll discover a rich and vibrant Zinfandel, pulsing with raspberry, baked blueberry, pepper, nutmeg, Christmas spices, red cherry, plums, dried fruit, violets, wildflowers, coffee and a splash of Tawny Port. What’s so impressive about Juvenile is that, where some Zinfandel can feel over-blown and heavy, this pretty and vegan-friendly wine has energy, freshness, vigour and vim – and that’s why you’ll soon find yourself pouring a second glass. Pair Juvenile with adult conversation.
