Twelve Keys No.33 Dry Gin
Twelve Keys No. 33 Dry Gin is a work of beautiful alchemy, transforming base ingredients into liquid gold. First tasted at its launch in June 2018 at Junipalooza, We were astounded by the outstanding quality of this London Dry Gin from Norfolk. A masterpiece painted on a canvas of rich floral honey, splashed broadly with all-guns-blazing juniper, deeply warming spices and silky smooth fruit. Where so many gins are crisp and citrus-focussed, Twelve Keys walks a different path of fig, apricot, quince, exotic opulence and warmth, making it an exquisite choice for the colder months.
Founder Matthew Clifford was introduced to Matt Gammell and Markus Pickering of Pickering’s Gin in one of Edinburgh’s basement bars. This chance meeting sparked a journey of discovery. When Matt returned to Norfolk he began to collate an encyclopaedic knowledge of gin from tasting over 150 bottles, piecing together literature and studying the steps Sam Galsworthy, Fairfax Hall and Master Distiller Jared Brown followed at Sipsmith. Now he has put this study into action…
The elegantly packaged gin is inspired by The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine, thought to be a pseudonym for a collective of German alchemists, which was published in 1599. Written at a time when chemistry, religion and mysticism were all intertwined, this legendary transcript included twelve woodcut engravings thought to detail, via coded symbolism, the steps required to create The Philosopher’s Stone – a fabled substance considered the elixir of life with the ability to turn base metals into gold. As a nod to this, Matthew Clifford uses twelve botanicals that plot a history through the history and evolution of distilling from the Greek god Bacchus, to ancient Persia, on to early medicines and the records of gin by Cathar priests. The twelve key botanicals are floral honey from his own wildflower meadow, fig, caramelised quince, juniper, basil, apricot, caraway, frankincense, cinnamon, orris root, gentian and angelica. All that alchemy unlocks something extremely precious: Twelve Keys No. 33 Dry Gin is liquid gold and the elixir of a perfect Martini. The signature gin and tonic is garnished with coffee beans and figs, but we find it goes particularly well with our Elderflower & Pomegranate Tonic Water.
