1856 Premium Whiskey
Drink to stories untold, the truth coming to light and hopefully changing times with Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey, crowned the World’s Best Tennessee Whiskey at the World Whiskies Awards 2019.
Nathan Green, known as Uncle Nearest by his family and friends, was probably the greatest whiskey maker that the world never knew. Although almost entirely written out of history, as many former enslaved people have been, his legacy is immense and should be shouted from the rooftops. He was the first African-American master distiller on record in the USA; he taught a certain Jack Daniel (the most famous whiskey maker who’s ever lived) the intricacies of distilling in the mid-1800s; and he’s widely regarded to be the man who perfected the Lincoln County Process – the technique of filtering whiskey through sugar maple charcoal prior to maturation in charred oak barrels that defines Tennessee whiskey. The unique approach he used was most likely passed down to him from West Africa, where water was filtered through charcoal to purify it. So, in short, there would be no Tennessee whiskey and no Jack Daniel’s without the master craftsman and innovator Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green.
Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey is bold, yet unbelievably smooth. Although this blend of barrels ranging between eight and fourteen years of age has been bottled at 50% ABV, it’s still very much a ‘sippin’ whiskey’. Butterscotch, vanilla, marzipan, roasted and buttered corn on the cob, Nutella, rose petals, spiced apple pie and cream, oat and raisin flapjack, dried apricots and maple syrup; perfect for enjoying with your nearest and dearest.
