“Very tasty Graciano.” – Wine Advocate
Forget the perfectly manicured vineyards of the famous Rioja region and head off-the-beaten-track into to the old village of Corella in Navarra. Here you’ll find twisted and gnarled Graciano vines planted in the 1970s and tended by the Sanz brothers. Viña Zorzal is a winery who are “big news… clearly one of the names to watch in Navarra” according to Wine Advocate, and the “coup de Coeur” of their visit to the region in the summer of 2017.
Graciano is a high quality and deeply perfumed grape variety that used to be abundant in Rioja. However, because it’s low yielding and difficult to grow, it rather fell from grace. In the right hands it produces beautiful mulberry- and menthol-scented reds. The pioneering Sanz brothers have committed to re-establishing this variety in their native land, and their 100% Graciano is now one of the most sought-after wines they produce.
As Wine Advocate say, this is a very tasty Graciano. You’ll discover brambles, raspberry jam, cherry juice, peonies, burnt orange peel, a hint of mint and beautifully integrated oak. When it comes to food matching, think stews and game, or earthy flavours like beetroot, roasted aubergine, slow-cooked mushrooms, paprika, cumin or pibil.
