Krimiso Catarratto 2016
Fourth generation Sicilian winemaker Aldo Viola describes his work as “bottling this superpower magic potion that nature gives us". Now we ask you, who doesn’t want to pour themselves a glass of Mother Nature’s superpower magic potion?
Krimiso couldn’t be more bang on trend if it tried. It’s naturally fermented, biodynamic, organic, low sulphur, tiny production, orange wine. For the uninitiated, orange wines are white wines that are left to ferment naturally on the skins giving a deeper colour, a little tannin (the gum-drying sensation you feel with red wines and tea) and some pleasantly nutty, sour and oxidised flavours. Sometimes these wines can be extremely volatile, funky and challenging, but Krimiso is remarkably clean, refreshing and approachable, making it an excellent introduction to the latest fashion in wine.
Crafted from a classic Sicilian variety called Catarratto, Krimiso has bags of character: dried apricot, ripe peach, baked apple, hay, lemon peel, marmalade, sea salt, Mediterranean herbs and a faint waft of cider. Pair this intriguing white with something like pâté, fresh cheese, fish pie or coq au vin.
