San Carlos Single Vineyard Malbec 2018
93 points, “Aromas of blueberries, blackberries and dark chocolate follow through to a full body, pretty density of fruit and a flavourful finish. Beautiful density and character. Meaty and fruity aftertaste.” – James Suckling
In 1993, Viu Manent created the very first Chilean Malbec and they continue to push the boundaries with this single-vineyard wine. The grapes were picked by hand from the best blocks on a vineyard at the San Carlos estate near Cunaco that was planted more than 100 years ago. Matured in a combination of French oak, concrete eggs and clay tanks for 14 months, the wine is brimming with black fruit and leathery old-school charm. Blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, black cherries, plum crumble, spiced jerky, silky hazelnut praline and notes of violet reminiscent of Piedmont Barolo are all present in this rich and rounded Malbec. And we love to pair this with a big sausage stew, wild game or a spicy bean chilli with dark chocolate.
“Viu Manent makes excellent wines across the board” according to the respected American wine critic, James Suckling. Founded in 1935, the winery is still owned and run by the Viu family. Their ancestors came to Chile from Catalonia and today their extensive vineyards spread across 254 hectares of the Colchagua Valley, which can be visited on antique horse-drawn carriage tours. In fact, Decanter Magazine ranks Viu Manent in the Top 10 wineries to visit for foodies, presumably in no small part because of their stunningly food-friendly wines.
