In celebration of Australia Day, Wine Australia hold a huge tasting in London to showcase the quality and diversity of Australian wine. At the event held in January 2023, this big red was our Wine Buyer Bryan Rodriguez’s wine of the show. In fact, he liked it so much that he secured the last fifteen cases available in the UK for Harvey Nichols.

He’s not alone in loving Wakefield Masterstroke Cabernet Shiraz 2016 either. The writer and critic Huon Hooke is one of the most trusted voices in Australian wine, and this is what he had to say about it…

96 points, “Very deep, dark, bright colour with a good tint of purple. Intense spice, oak and dark-cherry aromas, bright and vibrant, young and still settling in. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and powerful, with a very long carry. Both the Shiraz and Cabernet can be discerned. This is still young and begs for more time. It has tremendous potential.” – Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Masterstroke is one of the newest ranges to be released by Wakefield Wines. This is where they pay tribute to the regional discoveries and innovative decisions that have shaped the course of Australian winemaking. This wine is an homage to the great blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. It hails from Clare Valley in a vintage, 2016, when Mother Nature doled out perfect conditions and rain just when required. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Shiraz is matured in 70% French and 30% American oak for almost two years before being bottled. Pour a glass to discover aromas of plum crumble, mint chocolate, red cherry, herbal tea and cedar. Sipping it, you’ll taste more of the same, plus a seam of silky crème de cassis leading to a long and moreish finish. The real masterstroke will be hiding a couple of these in the cellar and forgetting about them for a while. But if you can’t resist it now, then serve with something slow-cooked and hearty, such as chunky pasta with a rich ragù.

Inspired by his love of Bordeaux’s Médoc and the fine terroir of South Australia’s Clare Valley, Bill Taylor founded his winery on the banks of the Wakefield River in 1969. He entered his inaugural Cabernet Sauvignon vintage into the Royal Adelaide Wine Show in 1973 and picked up the prestigious Montgomery Trophy for best red wine in show. Fast forward fifty years and Bill’s grandson Mitchell Taylor now runs Wakefield Wines and they’ve received more than 2,000 medals and awards over the intervening years.
