94 points, “Dark in profile, with warm buckwheat, singed juniper and espresso notes leading off, backed by warm blackcurrant and fig compote flavours. Has heft, but the brambly undertow is easily absorbed through the finish. Approachable, but there’s no rush at all.” – Wine Spectator
1997 was an unusual year that started warm before turning cool. Luckily the heat returned in August and the results were excellent, resulting in structured Ports that appear to have excellent longevity. As always, Warre’s excelled.
Now with a quarter of a century under its belt, the ripe raspberry, plum, blackcurrant and cherry fruit flavours have become darker and toastier. Warre’s tell-tale floral aromas are still there, plus a pinch of peppery and pine-like spice. Some Tawny notes of coffee, dried fig, leather and roasted nuts are beginning to develop too. Partner this phenomenal Port with berry crumble, chocolate desserts and mature cheeses. Alternatively, it makes a fine gift to mark any special 1997 anniversary.
Warre’s – owned by the Symington family – ranks amongst Port’s most famous names, renowned for producing a restrained yet deeply concentrated style of vintage Port. Their coveted releases are typically slow to develop, possessing a unique mineral scented character that gives them wonderful complexity and style. The Symington family are trusted hands because they are the world’s leading producer of premium Port and the biggest vineyard owner in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty. The company is also B-Corp Certified, which means they are also on it when it comes to the environment, sustainability, their people, their supply chain and giving back to the community.
