10 Year Old Rye Whiskey - WhistlePig

10 Year Old Rye Whiskey

Some prefer their whiskey without the ‘e’. Others consider rye inferior to malt. But that’s all about to change. This game-changing estate in Vermont will have you whistling a different tune, as proven by its inclusion Ian Buxton’s 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die book.

This stunningly good 10 Year Old release is made exclusively from 100% aged rye, which imparts a uniquely full-bodied, spicy and unadulterated taste to the whisky. Before being bottled, it’s aged for at least a decade through a unique double-barrel process – it spends five years in first-fill white American oak barrels and another five in used Bourbon barrels. The resulting whisky is forward and pronounced on the nose, displaying hints of vanilla and caramel, dried orange peel, cinnamon, allspice and clove. Full and textural in the mouth, an indulgent assortment of flavours are suggested including caramel, pecan, vanilla and a rich rye spiciness. Dark chocolate, peppermint followed by oranges, vanilla, allspice, finishing with a hint of dark chocolate and butterscotch come through on an explosive finish. Now available in this miniature format, so you can try before committing to a whole bottle, WhistlePig 10 Year Old Rye is a must-try for American whisky enthusiasts.

Founder Raj Peter Bahkta sank his last dime on this 500-acre ex-dairy farm in Shoreham. He then shrewdly talked distiller Dave Pickerell – who had spent 15 years at Maker’s Mark – into joining him to pursue the dream of reincarnating farm to bottle American rye whiskey. Many have called this venture pig-headed because rye is notoriously difficult to work with. But anyone who has tasted their outturn knows that this is one of the whiskies to watch.
