The dark arts of the whisky distiller are shrouded in mystery and magic. What happens in those stills and barrels is an enigma. Bruichladdich’s Black Art series is testament to that.

This iconic distillery always focussed on quality over quantity, preferring manual over machine. That was one of the reasons why it fell out of favour with its old owners and was eventually shut down in 1994, being deemed ‘surplus to requirements’ in an age of efficiency and ‘more is more’. However, this whisky was made before that, back when there were no rules and no restrictions.

Black Art 10.1 is a furtive and cryptic dram. All we know about it is that it’s 29 years old and non-chill filtered. But the barley used, the cask type and the recipe all remain undisclosed. Stocks of these rare, old Bruichladdich casks are dwindling, making each new release more precious than the last. Unique and unrepeatable, it bursts from the glass with aromas of apricot jam, gooseberry fool, heather honey, lemon zest, praline, cherry chocolate liqueurs, cedar and toasted oak. In the mouth, it comes with orange barley sugars, fudge, Christmas cake, plum crumble, iodine, mulled wine spices, tobacco, desiccated coconut, melon and juicy fruits. A Black Art expression is always an exciting prospect, guaranteed to keep the malt maniacs up at night as they try to pick it apart and unravel the riddles it holds. This one has

Of course, the Bruichladdich story didn’t end when the distillery was closed by White and Mackay in the 1990s. It was dismantled, reassembled and resurrected at the beginning of the millennium, undergoing a huge renaissance, but always staying true to its artisanal roots. In May 2020 Bruichladdich became B Corp certified, which means that they’re part of a global movement of companies that put people and the planet before profit. That makes this a delicious and ethical choice.
