Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012 is the newest cask experiment in Bruichladdich’s heavily peated Single Malt. The fifth release in the series it was crafted using 100% Islay-grown barley from withing 10 miles of the distillery which was then peated to 40ppm and distilled in 2012. This wonderful 9-year-old Scotch was initially matured in a mix of Sherry butts and Bourbon barrels before being recasked into Sauternes casks (hence the ‘SC’ in the name). The distillery is keeping the origin of the French wine barrels secret but we all know that Bruichladdich’s sourcing and provenance is second to none so they are probably from one of the most famous names in the world of fine wine (yeah that one you’re thinking of). Hints of barbeque smoke peaches in Armagnac dried apricots candied pineapple honeydew melon honeysuckle heather honey vanilla fudge marzipan chocolate-covered orange peel earthy peat polished leather boots and the refreshing tang of charred citrus. It’s a very complex dram as you would expect from one of the titans of the alcoholic beverage world. But what we love most about it is that it feels quite summery for such a heavily peated Scotch. Charge the hip flask and enjoy it around a campfire after a long day hiking in the sun.
Port Charlotte was founded in 1829. Although the name changed to Lochindaal whisky production continued for a full century until it was finally closed in 1929. With only a couple of warehouses left standing and remaining stocks becoming more elusive than unicorns it has quickly become the stuff of Islay legends. However following notes made by the brewing and distilling historian Alfred Barnard Bruichladdich has lovingly resurrected the brand and the spirit of the early pioneers who lived in the village of Port Charlotte.
