The critics are yet to release their scores for Bruno Giacosa’s Barbaresco Rabajà 2016 but it’s worth remembering that Italian expert James Suckling awarded the previous vintage 99 points. So we’re expecting big things. Especially as “Piemonte produced excellent quality wine in 2016” according to Jancis Robinson.
Famed for his ability to select the finest fruit the bespectacled Bruno Giacosa was a sad loss to the fine wine world when he passed away in January 2018 making wines like this even more sought-after. But as Decanter Magazine puts it “his style and standards are being maintained by his daughter Bruna.”
Bruno Giacosa has two neighbouring Barbaresco’s. The first is Asili renowned for its finesse and elegance and the second is Rabajà which is full-bodied and rich. Production of Rabajà in 2016 was tiny only around 3624 bottles so demand will be huge. The majority was squirrelled away into the cellars of collectors long ago. Expect notes of rose perfume dried cherries blackberries plum crumble truffle tobacco rosemary juniper and freshly laid asphalt. It’s an incredible wine that demands to be served alongside slow-cooked stews wild mushroom rich truffle dishes or roast game.
