The Islay Festival – known locally as Fèis Ìle – is a chance for fans of the island’s whisky to come together and rejoice in its brilliance. But don’t worry if you missed Fèis Ìle 2022 because there were loads limited-edition whisky releases. And this is one of our favourites from this year’s outturn.

Abhainn Araig means ‘Araig River’ and is a celebration of one of the rivers that feeds into the Margadale River – the pure spring water source for Bunnahabhain whisky. It’s a marriage of spirit matured in ex-Bourbon casks and ex-Pedro Ximénez Sherry octave casks. The latter are smaller barrels that are about an eighth the size of a standard Sherry butt and they add immense concentration. The result is an unpeated highly sherried and non-chill filtered Bunnahabhain which has been bottled at a warming 50.8% and with its natural colour. Expect crystallised ginger chocolate-covered raisins cigar box leather honey-roasted nuts treacle toffee cinnamon balsamic and something that reminds us of Kellogg’s Special K Raspberry breakfast cereal served with creamy milk.

Probably one of the most difficult single malts to pronounce but Bunnahabhain is without doubt one of the easiest to drink. You’ll find this legendary malt maker down a misty single track road on the east side of Islay. Pronounced ‘boona-havn’ it’s the most northerly of the island’s distilleries and it likes to do things a little differently. Rather than chasing ever peatier and smokier styles like its neighbours Bunnahabhain creates unpeated or lightly peated silky smooth and creamily drinkable drams.
