94 points “This wine shows great refinement and would not look out of place standing amongst some of the finest young Pouilly-Fuissés of Burgundy.” – Greg Sherwood Master of Wine

As Hamilton Russell and Restless River have proven Hemel-en-Aarde is one of the most exciting places to make wine in South Africa at the moment. And things are really hotting up there now that the legendary Marc Kent – the maverick behind Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block and Porseleinberg – has launched his debut vintages of Cap Maritime.

The inaugural release of Cap Maritime Chardonnay 2017 is extremely elegant and will obviously draw comparison to the finest wines of Burgundy but wine critic Jancis Robinson warns against that because this “outstanding” white has “very much its own style”.

The grapes are handpicked and gently transported to the Boekenhoutskloof winery in Franschhoek. There winemaker Gottfried Mocke ferments the juice with natural yeasts in a predominantly new French oak but with a significant proportion in uber-trendy concrete eggs. It’s left to mature for 14 months before bottling. Only 400 cases were made so this will quickly become very hard to find. Therefore don’t miss out on this Chardonnay with its delightful flavours of mint leaf lemon cream nectarine underripe melon spring blossom Scandi gingerbread vanilla and sea breeze across a pebble beach. Although delicate it buzzes with energy and potential like a surging power cable.

The debut from Cap Maritime suggests that this will very soon become one of South Africa’s stars if it isn’t already.
