98 points “The 2016 Sammarco is a dense flamboyant wine. Inky red fruit spice cedar tobacco menthol and liquorice are some of the notes that build in a statuesque Sammarco that dazzles from start to finish. A wine of stunning textural richness and intensity Sammarco is translucent sculpted and full of character. All the elements are so well balanced. Rose petal cedar tobacco and mint linger on the eternal finish. The 2016 is a magical wine that can be surprisingly enjoyed now or cellared for a number of years. Time in the glass just brings out its energy and vertical drive. Sammarco is quite possibly the single greatest value in high-end Italian wine. Don't miss it.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media

Antonio Galloni’s score places the “statuesque” Sammarco above the likes of Sassicaia and Ornellaia and alongside the Tignanello and Masseto in the 2016 vintage. However costing a fraction of the price of its rivals the critic is 100% accurate in noting its unrivalled value for money in the Super Tuscan category. The 2016 Sammarco was held back for an extra year of ageing before its release but it has clearly been well worth the wait…

The di Napoli family has owned Castello dei Rampolla in Panzano for almost 300 years. In the mid-1960s Alceo di Napoli Rampolla had a dream to create wine. With a little help from the legendary oenologist Giacomo Tachis a titan of the fine wine world he made that dream a reality.

With a prime location in the famous Conca d’Oro or ‘golden basin’ – Rampolla’s illustrious neighbours include Fontodi Cafaggio La Massa L’Orcio Le Cinciole and Gagliole’s Valletta estate – success was inevitable. All their grapes are grown in Greve one of the original five townships for Chianti. In the early-1990s Castello dei Rampolla converted to the fashionable practice of biodynamics which took their wines to a whole new level of terroir expression.

After visiting to taste the latest vintages Antonio Galloni said “Castello dei Rampolla has been one of Tuscany’s leading estates for more than four decades… The Rampolla wines are world class… I tasted the wines twice just to make sure my enthusiasm was not more a reflection of being in Chianti Classico after two years [because of the Covid-19 pandemic]. It wasn’t. The wines are off the charts.”

The soils in this area of Chianti are gravelly not dissimilar to Graves in Bordeaux. So the pioneering Castello dei Rampolla was one of the first Chianti Classico estates to plant Cabernet Sauvignon. When considering Cabernet-dominated Super Tuscans we instantly think of Sassicaia Solaia and Ornellaia. But Sammarco predates Ornellaia and was the brainchild of Giacomo Tachis the same winemaking talent behind the “aia” trio. So this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Sangiovese really needs to be elevated in the hierarchy of fine wine.

Described by the experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate as “a wine of courage and vision ” Sammarco 2016 is a phenomenal red. Polished notes of crème de cassis blackberries mint coffee oak spices and Cuban cigars all come together in the most glorious harmony. These bottles will not hang around for long.
