2019 was a good year in Piedmont, making Castello di Neive’s Basarin Dolcetto d’Alba an intriguing red, especially for the autumn months.

Although almost always completely dry, Dolcetto means “little sweet one”. The name is thought to come from a Piedmontese word referring to the rolling hills where the grape is grown and the relatively soft acidity. The Dolcetto grapes for this expression from Castello di Neive are harvested in the ‘Basarin’ vineyard. Only around 4,000 bottles are made a year, making it a step above the average Dolcetto. Intense and warming, it displays a delicious combo of red, blue and black fruits, alongside notes of balsamic, mocha, festive spices, almond and pepper. Consider pairing it with game, Turkish grills, rustic pasta dishes, balsamic roasted beetroots and hearty stews.

The 17th Century Castello di Neive is owned by the Stupino family, who purchased it in 1964. They found that the famous Santo Stefano vineyard had fallen fallow, so decided to replant it. This was a wise choice, because Bruno Giacosa has described this as the best in Barbaresco. Although the estate’s flagship wine, the Albesani Santo Stefano Riserva, steals much of the limelight, we just adore this under-the-radar Dolcetto d’Alba for its pure drinkability.
