This wine proves the old adage that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover…

Don’t let that sleek beautifully designed and modern-looking bottle fool you; this wine is as charmingly old school as they come. Think Argentina’s answer to classic Claret and oaky Rioja Reserva. It oozes history and tradition from every drop especially when served from a rare magnum.

Hailing from what Jancis Robinson described as “one of the best vintages of the decade in Mendoza” Cavas de Weinert Gran Vino Cask Selection 2009 is a blend of Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that has been aged for almost a decade in oak. With its timeless Old World vibe this silky smooth red displays concentrated dark fruit smoke cedar cigar box earthy spices leather chocolate and a little Brettanomyces (the funk often associated with Château Musar and wines from the Northern Rhône). We love it with stews cooked low and slow on winter nights. Awarded 93 points by Master of Wine Tim Atkin it’s a truly great wine in an atypical style for Argentina that really sets it apart from its competitors. This magnum will continue to evolve for a good 20 years or more.

Founded in 1975 Bodega y Cavas de Weinert is the embodiment of the European influence on Argentine wine. Located in Luján de Cuyo Mendoza their wines exude elegance and style in no small part because of the long maturation period in large wooden casks that they receive before being released. Fans of Old World wines and Malbec lovers looking to try something a little different from Argentina will both find much to love here.
