Les Vignes d'à Côté means ‘the vines from next door’ because although Yves Cuilleron is a master who makes exceptional wines in almost all the most prized plots in Northern Rhône he also creates stupendously great-value bottles from the vineyards that run alongside them (IGP Collines Rhodaniennes). Tasting like a mini Côte-Rôtie or Saint-Joseph this Syrah is organically farmed to protect the local biodiversity and vinified using indigenous yeasts and wooden barrels for half of it. The result is a silky mouthful of peppery black fruit that makes for wonderful summer drinking (even lightly chilled). Serve alongside barbeques grills roasted vegetables and zingy Middle Eastern dishes.
Yves Cuilleron has been described by Wine Spectator as “the leader of Condrieu’s new generation of winemakers” but that wasn’t always the dream. He tried to break away from the family business by training as an engineer but when his uncle retired – leaving no successor – he was lured home. After studying in Burgundy he came back to the Rhône in 1987 to apply a new scientific rigour to the Cuilleron estate and build a new winery in Chavanay. Since then Cave Yves Cuilleron has become one of the region’s stars for everything from top-end Condrieu Saint-Joseph Côte-Rôtie Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage to the great value Vin de Pays it creates from beyond the confines of the famous appellations.
