The ‘Chairman’ in Chairman’s Reserve was Laurie Barnard. He was the Chairman of Saint Lucia Distillers and the grandson of Denis Barnard who built the family’s original distillery. Sadly Laurie Barnard passed away in 2012 and so Chairman’s Reserve Legacy was released in his honour.

While other distilleries were purchasing column stills and ramping up production Laurie was a pioneering and visionary leader who was investing in rare barrel types small copper pots stills proprietary yeast strains and higher quality sugarcane. Fermented using his favourite wild yeasts it contains molasses rums distilled on John Dore and Vendome pot stills and a Coffey column still as well as a component of refreshing sugarcane juice distillate from the Roseau estate. Each component is matured in ex-Bourbon barrels for between five and eight years before being married together to create a fitting legacy to the late great Laurie Barnard. Mahogany coloured this is a Caribbean classic with a touch funk grilled pineapple ripe mango barbequed banana vanilla ice cream high ester notes of wood polish sweet spices acetone and lots of woodiness. Dangerously smooth it has no sharp edges whatsoever. Our Spirits Buyer describes Chairman’s Reserve Legacy as “just an absolute treat”.

Attracted by the island’s expansive sugar plantations the Barnard family established their distillery on Saint Lucia in the 1930s. For a long time all was happy on this tropical paradise surrounded by breath-taking waterfalls unspoiled rainforest palm-fringed beaches and the towering Piton Mountains but sadly the rise of the European sugar beet looked like it would kill off centuries of rum making heritage. The last sugar plantation closed in the 1960s being replaced with more lucrative bananas. So the two remaining distilleries on the island – Dennery on the Barnard’s plantation and the other in Roseau owned by the Dutch company Geest – joined forces creating Saint Lucia Distillers. Creating stunning rums under the Chairman’s Reserve brand using molasses sourced from Guyana shipped into the jetty at Roseau Bay they saved the island’s rum culture. With three pot stills and a continuous still Saint Lucia Distillers are able to make all kinds of rum but the focus always remains quality over quantity.
