One of the all-time greats from an exceptional vintage. A wine cellar isn’t really a wine cellar at all without Château Cheval Blanc’s epic 1990. Receiving huge scores from the critics Wine Advocate has described it as “unequivocally a brilliant wine” meanwhile Jancis Robinson admits “this wine has been beautiful all its life.”
Jam-packed with plummy fruit dark chocolate-covered cherries coconut gun smoke tea leaves coffee blackcurrant spices leather and an umami twang of soy sauce. ‘Jam-packed’ suggests disorder but this all fits together in an elegant pleasing and tightly-fitted manner like a jigsaw.
Saint-Émilion’s Château Cheval Blanc has produced some of Bordeaux’s and therefore the world’s greatest ever wines. One of only four Saint-Émilion châteaux to be bestowed the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé A Robert Parker has described Cheval Blanc as “one of the most elegant and noble wines in all of Bordeaux”. If the Right Bank had First Growths this would certainly be one as it irrefutably produces the finest and most sought-after Cabernet Franc-based wines in the world.
Sitting on the border of Pomerol it has a diverse and unique terroir and the style of the wine can vary quite dramatically from vintage to vintage. This is what makes it so exciting. Cheval Blanc aims to produce wine that emphasises the particular characteristics of that growing season; their team works with the vintage rather than struggling against it. In cooler vintages the wine might resemble a Grand Cru Burgundy or in a hotter vintage it may display a New World ripeness. It has therefore become a particular favourite of the ‘wine geek’ as there’s always something new to discover in each vintage.
