97 points “The 2012 Cheval Blanc boasts stunning power and a vertical imposing sense of structure that is quite rare in this vintage. Dark and almost brooding in style the Cheval is a rare 2012 that absolutely demands cellaring. Smoke tobacco incense and dark spices open up with time but the 2012 is a reticent tannic wine that is only showing the barest hints of its ultimate potential. This is a magnificent showing and one of the clear highlights of the year.” – Antonio Galloni

95+ points “Medium to deep garnet coloured the 2012 Cheval Blanc reveals lovely cassis warm black cherries and redcurrant jelly notions with underlying hints of cedar chest garrigue Indian spices and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied it possesses wonderful energy and freshness on the palate with a beautifully poised ethereal nature and long mineral-tinged finish. This elegantly crafted beauty should enter its drinking window in a couple of years and cellar gracefully for another 20+ years. Drink 2020-2040.” – Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

With reviews like that Cheval Blanc 2012 is clearly not a wine to miss. Each vintage of Cheval Blanc is completely different but this one is quite unique because it benefitted from a superb Indian summer (this meant late harvesting and therefore lots of complexity) and it received a 2% splash of Cabernet Sauvignon in amongst the Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Stylistically it dances an intriguing waltz between powerful Bordeaux and ethereal Burgundy and that’s exactly why we love this Saint-Émilion producer so much.

Château Cheval Blanc has produced some of Bordeaux’s and therefore the world’s greatest ever wines. One of only four Saint-Emilion châteaux to be bestowed the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé A Robert Parker has described Cheval Blanc as “one of the most elegant and noble wines in all of Bordeaux”. If the Right Bank had First Growths this would certainly be one as it irrefutably produces the finest and most sought-after Cabernet Franc-based wines on the planet.

Sitting on the border of Pomerol it has a diverse and unique terroir and the style of the wine can vary quite dramatically from vintage to vintage. This is what makes it so exciting. Cheval Blanc aims to produce wine that emphasises the characteristics of that growing season; their team works with the vintage rather than struggling against it. In cooler vintages the wine might resemble a Grand Cru Burgundy or in a hotter vintage it may display a New World ripeness. It has therefore become a favourite of the ‘wine geek’ as there’s always something new to discover with each release.
