CHÂTEAU CHEVAL BLANC Grand Vin Saint-Émilion 2013
94 points “Racy and refined.” – James Suckling
92 points “One of the most pleasurable you will find in this vintage.” – Wine Advocate
Production was down by 30% in 2013 at Cheval Blanc. Fewer than 50 000 bottles of the Grand Vin were produced making this a rare find. Each vintage of Cheval Blanc is completely different but this one is highly unusual because it contains fractionally more Merlot than Cabernet Franc. The wine feels almost Burgundian – maybe Richebourg – with its silky kirsch raspberry forest fruit wild strawberry orchard blossom violet and pine needle notes. This wonderful variety is exactly why we love this Saint-Émilion producer so much.
Château Cheval Blanc has produced some of Bordeaux’s and therefore the world’s greatest ever wines. One of only four Saint-Emilion châteaux to be bestowed the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé A Robert Parker has described Cheval Blanc as “one of the most elegant and noble wines in all of Bordeaux”. If the Right Bank had First Growths this would certainly be one as it irrefutably produces the finest and most sought-after Cabernet Franc-based wines on the planet.
Sitting on the border of Pomerol it has a diverse and unique terroir and the style of the wine can vary quite dramatically from vintage to vintage. This is what makes it so exciting. Cheval Blanc aims to produce wine that emphasises the characteristics of that growing season; their team works with the vintage rather than struggling against it. In cooler vintages the wine might resemble a Grand Cru Burgundy or in a hotter vintage it may display a New World ripeness. It has therefore become a favourite of the ‘wine geek’ as there’s always something new to discover with each release.
