Any rosé that comes from the team behind Whispering Angel and Garrus is a thrilling proposition. When it is made from old-vine Grenache, then where do we sign up?
Grenache and Vermentino (known locally as Rolle) fermented in a combination of stainless steel (to capture all the aromatics) and oak barrels (to add creaminess and richness), Château d’Esclans is a hidden gem that everybody should acquaint themselves with. Crunchy peach, lemon, raspberry sorbet, honeydew melon and a prickle of white pepper are mellowed by creamy vanilla, frangipane and white chocolate praline from the oak. There’s also a salinity and something akin to pebbles; a combination that instantly whisks our thoughts away to the beach. Oh for a glass of this while watching the sun go down over the sea…
The history of the blue-shuttered and hydrangea-surrounded Château d’Esclans dates back to the 12th Century, but Sacha Lichine of the famous Bordeaux family revolutionised the estate in 2006 when he turned the focus on to premium rosé. Now its monumental Provence rosés are household names and quite simply must-haves.
