“I sense that Garrus will, one day, be mentioned in the same breath as wines like La Tâche, Latour, Vieilles Vignes Françaises and Le Montrachet.” – Matthew Jukes

Garrus is the flagship wine from Caves d’Esclans, the estate that brought the world Whispering Angel. It has a huge cult following with many ranking it as the greatest rosé. A view only compounded by the fact that it was awarded a massive 95 points by the respected American wine critic James Suckling.

What began as a few barrels made in 2006 from vineyard of 80-year-old vines, Garrus has become a legend. It’s made by Bertrand Léon, who took over from his father Patrick Léon, the former winemaker at Château Mouton Rothschild. Garrus is matured for 10 months in oak barrels, which are stirred twice weekly to add depth, much as you would if making a Grand Cru Burgundy. Intense notes of red fruit sorbet, peach, nectarine, spiced cream and pebble beaches, this is probably the most gastronomic rosé on the planet. But just like all of Caves d’Esclans’ wines, all you really need is sunshine.

The history of the blue-shuttered and hydrangea-surrounded Château d’Esclans dates back to the 12th Century, but Sacha Lichine of the famous Bordeaux family revolutionised the estate in 2006 when he turned the focus on to premium rosé. Now its monumental Provence rosés are household names and quite simply must-haves.
