For those in-the-know this is a very special wine. 1985 was the first vintage after the Guinaudeau family took over Château Lafleur a Pomerol estate that they would go on to make legendary. According to Robert Parker “This is one of the greatest wines of the vintage possibly the slowest-to-mature wine of the vintage and potentially its longest lived.” He predicted a drinking window until 2030 a view that Jancis Robinson concurred with when she tasted it in 2015 describing it as “vigorous and spicy”.

If you have reason to celebrate 1985 or new beginnings or simply wish to taste a marvel in its prime look no further than this Château Lafleur. Dense exotic and figgy it’s packed with spiced black plums black cherries and blackberries and beneath that a wonderful truffley sous bois.

Pétrus and Le Pin steal the headlines in Pomerol but that’s only because there isn’t enough Château Lafleur to go around. Less than half the size of Pétrus only around 1 000 cases are made each year making it extremely challenging to come by. An “all-time favourite Bordeaux wine” for Robert Parker there aren’t enough superlatives to describe the quality consistency or collectability of this winery. However what sets it apart from its illustrious neighbours is its almost equal composition of Merlot and Cabernet Franc producing deep dense wines with heavenly structure and mesmerising aromatics.
