First up there’s the owners of Château Miraval Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt whose celebrity cachet speaks for itself and whose Provence rosé is adored around the world. Secondly there’s the highly esteemed Perrin family of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's legendary Château de Beaucastel. And rounding out this dream triumvirate comes Rodolphe Péters of Champagne Pierre Péters one of the most respected growers in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and an estate that has been a family home for six generations. According to Decanter Magazine although Péters’ Champagnes are “delicious in their youth they are also excellent candidates for long ageing developing a wonderful complexity and depth over time.” So don’t drink this too quickly.
These three parties have come together to create a truly sensational rosé Champagne. Fleur de Miraval is a blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir including sites such as Mesnil Cramant and Vertus. 25% of the wine is vintage Chardonnay; 25% is saignée method Pinot Noir; 25% comes from Rodolphe’s ‘perpetual reserve’ system containing wines that date back to 2007; and the last quarter is mature seven-year-old Blanc de Blancs bought in bottle and added back into the base wine. Aged on the lees for three years and bottled in a lacquered bottle to protect the wine’s perfume from ultraviolet rays the attention to detail on display here is second to none.
Fleur de Miraval opens with aromas of acacia honey blood orange pink grapefruit marzipan roasted hazelnuts and French apricot pastries. The palate is bright and energetic with elegant notes of orange peel raspberry sorbet peach buttery almond croissant salty sea spray and Champagne Pierre Péters’ signature chalkiness. And it’s not just Harvey Nichols that loves it Andreas Larsson – a man who has previously be crowned the Best Sommelier in the World – awarded it 95 points saying: “I must say that I was quite excited to taste the Champagne that everybody talked about but no one tasted yet.” He concluded that the wine is “elegantly built with great persistency and precision.”
