Château Mouton-Rothschild is the most glitzy of the First Growths and the only wine to have ever been upgraded in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. According to Wine Advocate: “Mouton is unashamedly gregarious flamboyant and melodramatic… a splash of colour in what can be a monochromatic region.”
In 2006 Philippe Dhalluin transcended what was not the greatest vintage to produce a showstopper that caused Robert Parker to note: “This extraordinary Mouton should turn out to be the finest they have made since the monumental 1982 and 1986.” Believed by many to be the best First Growth of the vintage this mesmerising Pauillac displays strawberry blackberry cherry porcini hazelnut tobacco and a creamy texture worthy of the huge critic scores.
Mouton Rothschild’s labels change each year. 2006’s was created by artist Lucian Freud who fled Germany and became a British citizen as war broke out. Creator of a controversial portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and a record breaker that fetched the highest price paid for a painting by a living artist Freud forewent his usual nudity and melancholy in favour of a joyous colourful and slightly out of character palm tree and zebra.
